Funki Memory

What You Need

1–4 Funki instruments and laminated memory cards, which you can make yourself. You can also include other instruments; if you do, create matching memory cards that correspond to the sounds of the additional instruments.

Preparation

Prepare laminated cards with the following images:

  • 4 × Water
  • 4 × Animals
  • 4 × Drums
  • 4 × Cars

Use the attached images or choose your own images that you feel are suitable for the participants.

Funki Instrument Settings

  • Kay (Green) – Water
  • Ove (White) – Farm Animals
  • Titti (Yellow) – Percussion
  • AC (Red) – Vehicles

Use adhesive putty or magnets to label each Funki instrument with the image that corresponds to its sound. For example, attach a picture of a car to the AC instrument.

How to Play

Gather the participants around a table and begin by singing a welcome song. Then explain the activity. You may use the attached visual support board, “Communication Board: Memory,” or introduce the activity in a way that best suits your participants.

Place the laminated memory cards face down on the table. Ask who would like to start. The participant who says yes or indicates that they would like to begin picks up a card and turns it over.

What image appears? Does it match the sound assigned to that participant’s instrument? Play the instrument and listen together to find out. If it matches, the participant keeps the card. Then move on to the next participant.

The first participant to collect all three of their matching cards wins the game.

Adaptations

If it takes too long to play the sounds and determine whether the card matches, simply compare the card with the image attached to the instrument instead.

Increase or decrease the number of matching cards to make the game longer or shorter.

Play in teams if you have many participants.

Want to practice communication skills? Use the “Communication Board: Memory” and encourage participants to communicate concepts such as “same,” “different,” “yes,” and “no” throughout the game.

Of course, you can create memory cards for any sounds that your participants enjoy!
